Cihat Burak

Cihat Burak (1915 Istanbul/ Aksaray – 13 March 1994 İstanbul), Turkish painter, architect, writer, and ceramic artist.
After completing his high school education in Galatasaray High School in 1937, he started to study in Architectural Faculty of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, formerly called Fine Arts Academy of Istanbul. After getting study as student of Sedat Hakkı Eldem, Bonatz ve Emin Onat, he graduated from university in 1943. He got first experiences about his branch while working for Tekel in Ankara. He had been sent to France with United Nation Scholarship in 1952, after working in project offices of Istanbul Technical University, General Directorate of Physical Training in Ankara and working as Head of Construction Works in Ministry of Public Works in 1951. Next 3 years, he studied architecture and painting in Paris. He restarted to work for Ministry of Public Works when he came back to Turkey in 1955. In 1957, he had been employed in Afghanistan for the construction of Turkish Embassy in Kabul. In 1961, he went again to France with the scholarship issued by Government of France and he observed prefabricated construction methods. In the end of scholarship, he resigned from his job in Ministry and stayed in France and started to teach painting lessons in a private fine art school and then İstanbul Tatbiki Government College of Fine Arts.
In 1957, he opened his first personal exhibition in Beyoglu City Gallery. He exhibited there his paintings which been completed while he was in France. Beside his paintings influenced by ‘’Social Realism’’, his other paintings as Dolmabahçe Saray Kapısı, Mezar Taşları and İncili Kız, are based on fantastic fiction. The artist’s painting called “Kanaryam Güzel Kuşum Ben Sana Vurulmuşum” has a death theme. Also he painted some of local celebrities as Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, Nazım Hikmet, Neyzen Tevfik, Eren Eyüboğlu and Aliye Berger and some cat paintings in his last period.
He worked as architect to earn his life and he painted because he loves painting. Also, artist has metal printing works, cooked soil sculpture, porcelain and glass works and in these works also we see the influence of Expressionism as his painting works.
He also wrote a book named ‘Yakutiler’, which won first prize winner in Competition of Yunus Nadi. His second book named ‘Zenci Kalınız’, which compiled from his handwrite and typescript notes published after 9 years of his death. He passed away in Istanbul on 13th of March, 1994.
